Keywords are the words and phrases typed into search engines that provide users organic search results, making keywords the guiding force to SEO efforts. Keyword research will provide you insight into your target audience and answer questions such as…
- What are people searching for?
- How many people are searching for it?
- What formation is information preferred?
- How difficult will it be to rank for a particular search query?
Pro-tip on keywords
Understand your “buyer persona” and their goals
Consider the problem that your ideal customer or potential visitor may be facing and the keywords they will search for to find the solution (your service) to their problem.
Note search volume and competition
Using tools such as Moz, related searches, auto suggestions, or Google keyword planner. Take note of the monthly search volume for each keyword you’re interested in targeting. See which content is currently ranking for these keywords to take note of competition. Consider what is working for the competition and emulate this but offer unique value.
Organize your content into topic clusters
Leverage your knowledge of keywords by establishing expertise on relevant topics through high quality, helpful content organized into topic clusters. Topic clusters are structured through a “pillar page” which provides a broad overview of a topic and links to subtopics which provide more depth and detail.
Through understanding your target customer, what they search for, your competition for those search terms, and how to establish yourself as an expert for those topics, with time and consistency you will soon rise through ranks.
