Take a moment to consider what provides you with clarity and eases your mind from the monotonous day-to-day tasks. For each person it may be an entirely separate activity but provides the same release. It may seem counterintuitive when your schedule is already packed to the brim, but if you set out non-negotiable “breath” time each day, week and month you may find yourself working with a newfound level of clarity and production.
For the day, this could look like 15 minutes in the morning spent reading, meditating, praying or running. Whatever you decide, just ensure that you do this activity before checking your phone or “attacking the day”. After your morning ritual, identify your highest priorities for the day before jumping into anything. This ensures that you are on track to complete what is most important to yourself and your future, without getting pulled in a million different directions ultimately taking you off track.
For the week, I set aside one day each week that is purely for myself. No work, no writing, no “mental output activities”. The only outputs should be physical output activities. Of course, there are weeks where this simply isn’t possible and that is when you revert to your day “breath” activities. When I take this day of rest, it opens my mind to consider new perspectives, areas that need improvement and ultimately takes me out of the “tunnel vision” I can get sucked into during my week. After all, if you are starting a new week already burnt out from the previous, you are not in a space to make any progress.
Overall…
- Set out non-negotiable time in your schedule for yourself.
- For the day, these can be 15-30 activities in the morning, do not look at your phone before these activities, and set your priorities for the day before you do.
- Take one day off a week, this will allow you to grade yourself from a clear perspective and re-enter the week rejuvenated.
