6/28: Top 5 Pre-Workout Meals

Finding the right pre-workout meal can require some trial and error. For each person the timing, meal size and food group may differ entirely. This can be a frustrating battle which can leave you feeling defeated. Here are a few go-to pre workout foods recommended by industry experts.

1. Oats and banana

Whole grain oats are fibrous and packed with energy to keep you working out harder, for longer. Bananas are full of potassium which will help you not cramp up during your workouts. Elevate this meal with protein powder mixed in and you will not regret it. This is my go-to and personal favorite.

2. Whole grain bread (add PB, or egg)

Similar to the oats, whole grain bread will provide you the much needed, long-lasting energy for your workout. Elevate this meal with some peanut butter or eggs.

3. Chicken, rice and vegetables

Although more of a meal and best suited to eat closer to an hour before exercise, this is another go-to. With chicken as one cleanest form of protein, rice for energy and vegetables for nutrients and healthy carbohydrates, you can’t go wrong with this one.

4. Eggs and veggie scramble

A quality pre-workout meal for cutting, eggs and veggies will give you protein and easily digestible carbohydrates before a workout. Zucchini and bell peppers are my personal favorite to add in but you can’t go wrong here.

5. Protein bar

My personal go-to if in a rush, just stop by the convenience store on the way to the gym and grab a protein bar. Look for lower fat, no sugar and high protein. Elevate this by grabbing a banana or small piece of fruit and you are good to go

Overall, the key is to listen to your body and do what works for you. If whole grains leave you feeling full during your exercise, then stick to a banana or eggs and vice versa. Once you find what works, maximize progress with consistency.
