I feel that a sound and productive gym routine teaches you discipline, consistency and ultimately serves as a constant in your life, but skiing, snowmobiling and the outdoors allow us to taste and feel freedom while serving as a reminder of how truly futile we really are compared to the forces of the universe. I was lucky enough to grow up skiing and snowmobiling in the backcountry with my dad and the sheer feeling of humbleness that comes with sitting on top of a mountain that could slide on you at any minute is something that sticks with you forever. You obviously check the snow conditions and plan ahead with avalanche gear but in the end, we are not in charge out there. All you can do is feel grateful for being able to experience that present moment and the gift of accessing terrain where few people get to. After all, you only have a few hours before you’ll be back in traffic heading into civilization. I miss these moments frequently and any chance I get, even if it’s a walk, run, or drive into the mountain, it’s these moments that I feel free, and everything makes sense for a glimpse.
